Ohhh man. Ok, so … Exactly a week ago, I went and visited my friend and magic mentor, Dick Kitterman. I was planning to borrow some magic VHS’ and DVDs from him, which I did indeed do. But he also showed me a wall of magical items, neatly packed in plastic tubs, and organized by style. He said that they were moving into a condo soon, and all this great magic stuff would end up in his daughter’s basement. If, that is, I didn’t want it.
Well, I would’ve had to be clinically retarded to not jump at that chance. These were magical items collected and used over the past few decades, many of which were so lightly used they looked brand new. He made me a very reasonable offer … practically a token amount considering the value of his collection. So I took it
I’m now the proud owner of 428 new magical effects and props, many of which were purchased before I was even born. Yet even the old stuff is generally in fantastic condition, and makes it perfect for use in my shows. A book that catches on fire, finger chopper, several rabbit vanish and production boxes, and tubs dedicated to nothing but rope, card, or money tricks. I’ve got three enormous cards made by magician/TV star Harry Anderson, whose limited run of 475 makes the item very desirable for magic collectors. The magic that could be achieved with various tricky tubes and gimmicked cylinders alone would fill an hour-long magic show.
So I’m very excited to have amassed the Kitterman Collection, and rest assured that these items will start to work their way into my show very soon (I’ve already begun to use a few magic wands). The fact that these are items from the guy who can be most credited for getting me started in magic makes the collection even more valuable to me. Those once-in-a-lifetime events are pretty cool.
